Every tobacco leaf underwent a journey at the Songshan Tobacco Factory that included raw material intake, sorting to stalk removal, shredding, flavoring, rolling, drying, packaging, warehousing, and transporting via rail. Each step was carried out by workers who had honed their craft every day.
This industrial process was intertwined with the unique daily rhythm of the Songshan Tobacco Factory. Early morning shifts kick off a day filled with machine operations, a shared goal of striving to boost performance, and enjoying well-deserved baths and entertainment at the end of the workday. These snippets came to form the distinctive ambiance of that particular era.
Inspired by the veins on tobacco leaves and railway tracks, this artwork invites everyone to take part in tracing and creating patterns and textures, with memories and handcrafted imprints preserved on pieces of ceramic.
All leaves on track traces Songshan Tobacco Factory’s industrial past and is also a tribute to an era when “production was on track.”
