One Thought, One Universe
LIULI Upcycles Design Exhibition

LIULI Regeneration, Endless Cycle!

Renowned for its revival of the lost technique of “Pâte de verre” and its cultural brand, LIULI Gong Fang is established with the mission of reviving the art of LIULI, and in recent years turned its attention to global environmental sustainability. They contemplated how to create LIULI art rich in Eastern aesthetic styles from a spiritual perspective that is “beneficial to humanity” and transitioning towards practical actions that are “beneficial to the Earth”. Since 2022, they have been incorporating "green design" into their works, using the theme of "One Thought, One Universe", integrating "recycled casting materials" into furniture creation, infusing “recreated LIULI” with new life, and producing a series of “tables with concepts of time and space”!

The United Nations designated 2022 as the "International Year of Glass", highlighting the importance of glass in environmental conservation. Glass shards can be sustainably recycled and remanufactured through remelting, making significant contributions to carbon reduction. In the same year, LIULI Gong Fang officially launched its ESG plan.

The founder of LIULI Gong Fang, artist Loretta H. Yang, boldly challenged and overturned the technique she developed 37 years ago, leading the team in Tamsui to explore changes in the craftsmanship process, seeking a more beautiful innovative formula under the framework of green design.

Every piece that have gone through all twelve steps of LIULI Gong Fang bears a piece of casting material, with flowing colors that are extremely enchanting, resembling the legendary Five-colored Stone used by Nuwa(女媧) in mending the sky. LIULI Gong Fang's circular regeneration project remelts these castings materials, tempering them into entirely new entities. They collaborated with furniture designer Jiang Shi zhen, the third generation of the Yeong Jin Furniture Factory with over 70 years of history, combining art and craftsmanship into delicate furniture with unique colors and textures through repeated experiments and conceptualization.

This project also enlisted the expertise of the circular economy specialist REnato lab to quantify the carbon reduction in the manufacturing process as data, serving as an important basis for the continued development of green design. One of the works in this exhibition, "Earth", manufactured through a revised process, reduced carbon emissions by up to 341 kilograms of CO2e, equivalent to the carbon sequestration of one year of a 47-centimeter diameter and approximately 11-meter tall camphor tree. In the complex LIULI casting process, which is considered difficult to decarbonize, such achievement holds profound significance.

A simple idea can open up many possibilities. LIULI Gong Fang presents this journey in its entirety at the exhibition, inviting the public to participate and appreciate the magnificent transformation of the colorful LIULI castings, the beauty of LIULI.

The exhibition will run from May 23rd to June 9th at Hall 02 of the Taiwan Design Museum in the Taipei Songshan Cultural and Creative Park, with free admission.
