Exhibition Introduction
The second exhibition of this year's Art Window Project at Songshan Cultural and Creative Park features a collaboration with the Auckland Festival of Photography, New Zealand, presenting a photography exhibition themed around the water. This curated exhibition of water themed images capturing moments of Aucklanders’ innate relationship with water in the city, rivers, harbours and beaches around its biggest city.
The exhibition is presented in partnership at the annual Songyanland Festival, aligning with the island nations of Taiwan, in the northern Pacific Ocean and islands of New Zealand from the southern part of the same ocean, creating an ocean crossing of culture and ideas. This project is a celebration of humanity’s interconnectedness, across borders, language and through photographic arts.
About the Exhibition
These images are selected from the public projects Auckland Photo Day and the Auckland Photo Blog Archives.
Alongside the photographs contributed by the public through these “citizen photography” project archives, four works by photojournalists from the national newspaper New Zealand Herald enter the exhibition from another perspective—the immediacy of the daily news cycle. Yet beyond the moment of publication, these photographs speak to something larger: our enduring relationship with water, whenua and place across Aotearoa New Zealand.
There is a sense of abundance here. Light falling across water. Vast horizons. Bodies move through landscape. Waka carrying generations of cultural memories. Moments that appear timeless, as though these places and experiences might remain suspended in an eternal state of beauty.
But photography deceives us in the most beautiful way.
It gives permanence to what is, by nature, temporary.
The light has already changed. The people have moved on. The tide has turned. The landscape continues its slow transformation. What appears fixed within the photographic frame is, in reality, part of an ever-changing world.
These photographs therefore become more than documents. They are fragments of memory—quiet records of places, people and moments that cannot be held still. They ask us to consider what we see, what we remember, and what might disappear.
In a world increasingly experienced through the digital image, photographs are everywhere and nowhere: endlessly captured, shared and consumed, while the physical environments they depict remain vulnerable to change. The abundance of images can make the extraordinary feel ordinary.
This exhibition asks us to look again.
To linger with the water. To enter the landscape. To become momentarily lost in its beauty and possibility. And then to consider the future.
For what we see here is not guaranteed.
Water becomes both subject and metaphor: a source of life, memory and identity, and a reminder of the continual transformation of the world around us.
It reminds us that nothing stands still.
Not the tide.
Not the landscape.
Not memory.
Not us.
In this sense, the photographs carry a quiet sense of urgency. They encourage us not simply to admire the beauty of Aotearoa’s water scenes and landscapes, but to recognize their fragility and consider what is at stake for future generations.
