《Spotlight ─
《Spotlight on Polish Illustration》
Spotlight on Polish Illustration presents a contemporary landscape of Polish illustration understood as a shared space of thinking in images, where narrative, drawing, and book design form a single, interdependent system. The exhibition focuses on recent publications — often newly released or still in production — treating illustration as a practice in motion, shaped by multiple distinct artistic languages.
Rather than organising the works into a single stylistic or generational framework, the exhibition constructs a constellation of voices. Each artist develops an individual approach to storytelling, yet together they form a field defined not by unity, but by exchange and the coexistence of different visual logics. What emerges is a polyphonic structure, bound by a shared question of how images can produce meaning beyond linear narration.
At the centre of this structure lies the book — not only as a carrier of illustration, but as a form that organises thought. It is a sequence that shapes rhythm, tension, pauses, and shifts in meaning. Illustration operates in relation to this structure: at times reinforcing it, at times destabilising it, and at times extending it beyond narrative boundaries into parallel and open-ended forms of sense-making.
Installed within Not Just Library, the exhibition situates these works in a context naturally associated with books, while shifting attention from reading as content consumption to reading as an act of observation. The book becomes a visual object — something not simply read linearly, but navigated through attention, return, and comparison.
The participating artists approach illustration as an open system rather than a fixed category. Their works move between observation and construction, humour and abstraction, intimacy and distance. Some build narrative continuity, others operate through fragmentation, metaphor, or visual reduction, yet all treat the image as a space where thought can take visual form without requiring final closure.
The exhibition includes 28 books and 28 original illustration sheets by 14 Polish artists. This structure allows the book to be experienced both as a complete narrative form and as a set of autonomous visual decisions, revealing how storytelling is distributed across image, sequence, and material form.
Spotlight on Polish Illustration ultimately proposes understanding illustration as a space of continuous translation — between image and narrative, artist and reader, structure and intuition, intimacy and publication, tradition and experimentation. It is not a presentation of a closed body of works, but an attempt to capture a moment in which illustration becomes a process of thinking: visual, relational, and open-ended.
It is an invitation into a field where drawing does not illustrate pre-existing content but co-creates it; where the book does not merely organise images but generates meaning; and where story does not precede image, but emerges alongside it — in an ongoing act of visual negotiation.
