2026 Songyanland Festival─ In or Out?

The historical buildings preserved within the Songshan Cultural and Creative Park are now 87 years old, with the site originating in 1939 as the “Songshan Tobacco Factory of the Taiwan Governor-General (Sōtokufu) Monopoly Bureau. The park officially opened to the public in 2011, marking its 15th year of operation. Over these years, it has become a vibrant cultural hub, hosting events focused on art, design, fashion, and sustainable innovation. The park became a place where people could readily access culture.

Inspired by growth that leaves its mark on everything it touches, the 2026 Songyanland Festival explores the theme between disappearance and preservation. Initially designed as an “industrial village” in 1937, the site featured a mix of residential and workplace areas, with public facilities built alongside the factory to support workers’ daily lives until the factory closed in 1998, leading to the decline of the industrial village community and leaving only physical spaces and names behind. Today, the site, now called "The Songyan Base," is integrated with the city's transport network and includes historic monuments, sports facilities, commerce, and entertainment. The ongoing transformation and development of this cultural life circle are shaping cultural memories across generations.

As we confront the escalating climate crisis, we must reflect on what will remain and what will be lost in the next 50 years as the park tackles preservation and conservation challenges. This year, we pose the thought-provoking yet frequent question, "In or Out?” It calls upon us to engage in meaningful intergenerational dialogue on the topics of "disappearance and preservation."
