About Songyan

The Songshan Cultural and Creative Park (SCCP) was originally built in 1937 as the Songshan Tobacco Factory of the Taiwan Governor-General (Sōtokufu) Monopoly Bureau. It was later renamed the Songshan Tobacco Factory under the Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corporation and remained in operation until 1998. Designated as Taipei's 99th municipal historic site by the Taipei City Government in 2001, the former factory was transformed into Songshan Cultural and Creative Park and officially opened to the public on November 15, 2011.

2

Office Building

Once used as offices and meeting rooms for factory employees, the building is thoughtfully designed with solid wood flooring, wooden window frames, and custom-made stone walls, reflecting both craftsmanship and attention to detail.

3

Songyan Court

Songyan Court serves as a connection between the Tobacco Factory and the Office Building. Near the entrance on the factory side, there is a monument engraved with the Songshan Tobacco Factory song.

4

Tobacco Factory

The Tobacco Factory was the heart of cigarette production. The first floor, characterized by its densely arranged columns, housed the leaf processing and cutting departments. The second floor, on the other hand, was an open, column-free space that housed the cigarette rolling and packaging departments.

5

Warehouses

At its peak, the tobacco factory housed up to 15 warehouses, but due to significant structural damage over time, only Warehouses No. 1-5 remain today. Built with reinforced concrete, brick walls, and wooden roof structures, Warehouse No.1 was originally used for finished goods storage, while warehouses No. 2-5 were used for materials storage.

6

The Nursery Room

Constructed after the war, the Nursery Room was originally located south of the Tobacco Factory but was relocated to its current site to accommodate the construction of the Taipei Dome. During the factory’s operation, it served as a daycare facility, allowing employees to leave their infants and young children with professional caregivers while they worked.

7

Ecological Pond

The Ecological Pond was originally a large artificial pond used for firefighting during the factory's operation. Now surrounded by a variety of native protected plants, the pond has become one of the rare wetlands in Taipei City, often referred to as the green gem of the city's Eastern District.

8

The Machine Repair Plant

The Machine Repair Plant was responsible for maintaining and repairing the cigarette production equipment. It was originally divided into three specialized sections: welding, mechanical repairs, and woodworking.

9

Boiler Room

The Boiler Room was the heart of the SCCP, and its towering chimney was once one of the Tobacco Factory's iconic landmarks. It used to burn heavy oil to generate steam, but after the 1970s, when the use of heavy oil ceased, the Boiler Room was decommissioned.

10

East Tobacco Factory

The cigarette production process at Songshan Tobacco Factory involved four main stages: leaf processing, cutting, rolling, and packaging. The first step, leaf processing, was carried out at the East Tobacco Factory, which served as the factory's leaf processing plant.

11

South and North Tobacco Factory

The South and North Tobacco Factory previously served as a leaf-cutting factory. In the leaf-cutting stage, the tobacco leaves were shredded, dried and cooled, then blended with various flavors. Once processed, the tobacco was sent to the second floor of the Tobacco Factory for rolling.

Unique Architectural Features

Window Grilles
The original windows of Songshan Tobacco Factory were designed with wooden grilles. However, with the advent of aluminum and iron windows as well as the need for greater durability, some were replaced with metal frames.

Niches
The curved niches outside the restrooms on the first and second floors of the South and North Tobacco Factory were initially designed as "sewage basins."

Fire Hydrants
The Fire Hydrants located on the first and second floors of the Tobacco Factory, have been preserved as part of the historic site and are no longer in use.

13

Baroque Garden

In 1958, the garden was designed by Lin Yuan-Lang, an engineer from the Taipei Distillery, at the request of factory manager Chen Lu-Tan. The layout follows a geometric design, blending Chinese and Western cultural elements. A standout feature is the three-tiered fountain, a rare champagne tower design, which also functions as a water reservoir for firefighting.

14

West Tobacco Factory

A corner of the West Tobacco Factory once housed a cigar factory. Songshan Tobacco Factory began producing cigars in 1968, when a box of 25 Gentleman cigars cost as much as 50 packs of the cheapest New Paradise cigarettes.

15

Bathhouse

The bathhouses for the employees were built at the beginning of the construction of the Songshan Tobacco Factory. Hot water was heated in the boiler room and distributed to the facilities. Both the men's and women's bathhouses had a semicircular pool filled with hot water. Workers could scoop and rinse themselves in the pool.

16

Clinic

During its operational years, the Clinic provided employees with annual health check-ups and basic medical care. It also performed minor procedures and was once staffed by up to two doctors and three nurses.

17

Second Floor of Tobacco Factory

The second floor of the Tobacco Factory was once the packaging facility. After the cigarettes were rolled and dried, they were packaged - 20 cigarettes per pack, 10 packs per carton - and then boxed for storage in the finished goods warehouse.

19

Conveyor Belt

To improve transportation efficiency, a conveyor belt was installed above Warehouse No. 2 and connected to the second floor of the Tobacco Factory. Inside the warehouse, the conveyor belt is spiral-shaped to cushion the descent to prevent damage to the packaged products.

20

Inspection Room

Initially the factory’s security office, the Inspection Room became a checkpoint after the war when tobacco prices skyrocketed. To prevent employees from hiding cigarettes, all workers had to pass through the Inspection Room at the beginning and end of their shifts.
